Here's what I did on my 2.4 quad4 Gasser Oldsmobile (water pump was driven of the timing chain, weep hole drained to the oil pan when the WP let go) I had...
After reassembly, drain oil, change filter, filled with fresh oil and Beryman's B-12, since it emulsifies the oil and water, let idle 15 min after reaching operating temp. Drain oil, change filter again, refill with fresh oil again.

You saw no sign of the head gasket being bad when you removed the head? I had a leak in a head gasket on my daughters 78 240. You could see bubbles coming out between block and head above where the old style GPs ground. I couldn't see any tell tale signs on the top of the block, head or gasket. I'm kinda new at this but I figured you'd see some evidence. Hopefully this is the case with yours, good luck.
