Last summer my 87 300TD wagon was "dieseling" and I took it in to a dealer as I thought that the shut-off valve needed replacing and I did not want to do it myself. The good news was they said that the vacuum lines needed cleaning and they only charged me for a half hour of labor. The bad news is that it is doing it again. All other vacuum items work fine, it just runs on when you shut it off after it is warmed up.

Question is, can I clean the vacuum lines myself, and if so how does one do that?

Thanks very much in advance for any suggestions.
John

Well, I'm not familiar with your particular year, but it seems to me that vacuum lines should not ever be dirty, and if they are, you have a leak in one of your components. Any oil or dirt in a vacuum line causes big problems. I would find out what is making them dirty.

Possibly a defective EGR valve? Better ask TXBill.

Shut Off Valve may need replacing if it is still leaking... not sure though.

Vacuum Lines

Thanks Silver Bullet...you were right about the shut-off valve.

I bit the bullet(no pun intended) and took my car to an MB dealer yesterday and they replaced the shut-off valve. The part was only $40.50, but it cost me $320, which included 3 hours of labor at $80 an hour here in Mpls/StPaul and 10% of the labor or $24 for "environmental fees".

Sounded like somewhat of a tricky job and I was short on time, so let the experts do it!

Thanks for your posts.
