Unhappy 1982 300SD Blowing Tail light / Dash light Fuse.

.
Hello All

We purchased a 1982 300SD.

The fuse that carries current for the dash lights and passenger tail light keeps blowing.

The previous owner would hit the top of the dash to get the dash lights to come on.

Now that my girlfriend replaced the stereo, hitting the dash no longer makes the dash lights come on.

And and the fuse keeps popping.

Where would you start looking for problems ?

Do the wires in this circuit have a common problem, like shorting somwhere, or maybe the connections to the dash lights grounding out.

Any help would be appreciated.

I hate tracking down wiring problems.

Thank You

RichC

When ever I have a fuse blowing problem I try to "divide" ant then conquer that problem.

On the bottom of the fuse box for each fuse there is several wires going to their respective consumer(s). by disconnecting each wire & putting a smaller in-line fuse in that wire & then re-connecting back to the fuse box you can see where the SHORT really is coming from.

open your trunk, look at the wire bundle that goes to your license plate lights, on the left hinge. it flexes every time the trunk is opened, and it can be a direct ground short.
aint the 82 a sweet ride?
