Unhappy Help! 82 300DT Won't Start, not glow plugs

Here's the story. 6 months ago the crank shaft sheared the pins that connect it to the counter balance. It started and ran great at that time. A couple of weeks ago I had the time to replace the pins and front crank seal, now it will turn over all day and not start. I tested the glow plugs & relay, bled the fuel system to the injectors still nothing. starting fluid does nothing either. Could I have messed up the cam timing somehow? Could there be an issue with the vacuum system? Could the fuel have gone so bad that it is preventing any combustion to take place? I dont know what to try next. any help would be great.

how sure are you that the Glow plugs are not the issue? I would recommend removing all of them, and testing them with a battery for visible glow. while they are out, I would perform a compression test. the pulley pin, should not have effected timing. also while the GP's are out, you should spin the motor over really well, with the IP lines off, to be sure the cylinders are free of compression robbing starter fluid and diesel.
I had a similar problem with my 79 TD, and it turned out to be really gummed up injectors coupled with bad GP's I removed each injector, cleaned the seats under the Heat shields, replaced the injectors and heat shields, and upgraded the GP's to pencil type. POW, the thing starts up on the first try now.
Starting fluid is for Gas motors, not diesel... I would never use it on a diesel. if you really want to be sure fuel is getting to a diesel motor, use WD-40, it won't harm a Diesel motor, unless you empty a can into a single cylinder.
if you don't have a compression tester, Harbor freight has them for around 30.00 and they put them on sale for less than 15 sometimes.
Good luck,
keep us posted,
John

Thanks for the sugestions. I have a compression tester with a fitting for a spark plug hole. Is there a special fitting for a glow plug hole, or can I find a fitting at a hardware store? Also, how old is too old for the diesel? Should I be planning to drain the tank, or will it run on 6 month old fuel if it was working like it should?

ahh, that Compression tester will not go high enough... you will need to get one designed for diesel engines with the bleed off button and all the fittings included to hook to the GP holes. Harbor freight has them pretty cheap.
and 6 month old fuel should be fine, unless there is water in it. oh, I see you are in CO. if it is really cold there, summer blend fuel may be too rich to flow...
