Maybe buying a 84' 300D - need advice!!

OK, I am not even in the market for another MB (as I am buying a truck this week), but I just ran across a super local deal- or at least it appears to be. Listed locally is a 1984 300D in VGC, that I am thinking of looking at if it is not sold - no rust, good paint, good interior and stated to run good. The asking price is $1000 obo. I have not "priced" these before, but this seems like a really good price for a diesel. If I bought it and it seemed like a really good car, I may sell my 85' 380SE, for the MPG benefits, but I really love my SE. Could this possibly be a buy that I could make money on? I guess I should check e-bay and see what nice 300D's are selling for.....

I am sure there are tons and tons of info here on these, but quickly - what all trouble spots should I look for on a 84' 300D - mechanically. Pretty much the same as the 380SE? I know that undercarriage rust can be a problem, but since this is a supposed southern car, I am assuming its OK, but I will check. Also- are the 84' 300D's turbo models? I am thinking that by 84' that they were.

Thanks in advance!!

I got my CD for that price, and it's hurting for new paint. That's a good price if it runs as advertised. You could definitely make some money on ebay off that car, especially if you advertised it as 1984 MERCEDES DIESEL BIODIESEL VEGGIE OIL CAR or something. If you really want to do that...

And don't forget "known to run for a million miles."

I have the same situation going on, except my SD is never, ever, going to be sold, and the 300d I am looking at is an '85 and is only $500! I am going to check it out tomorrow....it does need brake work, hopefully that is mostly it though.

As long as it runs and isn't rusted out, any MB diesel is worth over $1,000. The value definitely goes up with less miles, and also seems to fluctuate greatly based on the current cost of gasoline vs. diesel. I am sure if diesel was 20 cents cheaper than gas right now, it would raise the value at least 50%.
