Simplifing the Vacuum System, Please help.
Hello all, here is the issue, the vacuum system in my 85 SD(non cali) is alot more complicated than in a 83 SD, So I would like to simplify this system.
The Engine is going into a 84 SEC, and will be emissions exempt. So first question, can I remove the EGR vacuum setup without any risk to the engine. Second question, I want to remove the overboost system, and the vacuum transmission modulator, because I am going to be using a 4spd manual. What systems can I do without, do I need to use the vacuum converter, what about the control unit? Reliablility and performace are paramount. Let me know if you have simplified your vacuum system and what components I can remove. Thanks.

there is a thread on here somewhere of someone who did exactly that. play with your search terms and you will find it. but I cannot think of anything you could not do without on the system. ya need vac for brakes and fuel shutoff, as well as door locks. nothing else I can think of.

Thanks, I dont want to simplify it on the Car side, just the engine control side. Basically I just want to have the vacuum pump, connected to the brakes, and car systems, and of course the shutoff system, But not the tranny, EGR, or anything else that isnt necessary.
This car is going to be a nice daily driver with propane, and a 4spd manual tranny. It isnt subject to emissions testing, so I can eliminate the emissions control.

I did just this when I put the SD engine in my 240D.
You can remove all of the vac lines that run between the EGR, valves on top of the valve cover, plastic doohickey on the back of the IP, and temperature switch near the thermostat housing. You can also then remove the switches from the valve cover and the doohickey from the IP. The EGR will now be non-operational but ugly. To get rid of it order a EGR block-off kit from Mr. Carlton. As for the over boost switch...it is not vacuum related and it is a good idea to keep it unless you have a boost and pyrometer installed that you check frequently while driving. I did not see a vacuum transmission modulator on my engine, and am not really familiar with the auto trannies. You sure it doesn't stay with the car or transmission?
