190D 2.2 potential starter issue???
I am having some issues with my 1984 mercedes 190D 2.2 Diesel. I finally figured out the problem with my glow plug system and drove the car around for a day. I went to start it and the glow plug light comes on fine, then when I attempt to start the car, there is a tick/pop and the electrical system goes dead. The battery terminal then has to be disconnected to get any power back. I had the battery recharged and load tested at a shop then the same thing happened. this leads me to a few potential issues....
1. Starter lead is grounding somewhere. 2. Starter is dead. 3. Starter solonoid is dead. I also need to know where the starter is located, havent touched it before on this car. If anyone could help me narrow down these options or provide thier experience it would be greatly appreciated. BTW, the car has 423,000km on it and is still on the original starter! Thanks |

Have you checked the condition of the battery leads. sounds like there is some corrosion or a loose connection at the battery terminals. The starter is located on the drivers side under the intake/filter housing. It will take a swivel headed ratchet and a deepwell 17mm socket to remove it from underneath. But that wouldnt cause a complete power failure, it just wouldnt crank. Check the leads to the starter and the battery.

check all the ground connections, i'd bet that one of them is corroded away.........
