center vents dont blow air

No matter what setting I put the climate control on, the center 2 vents refuse to blow any air out. Any thoughts on what would cause this?

you seem like you know about this problem pretty good, any ideas on fixing it? Is it difficult?

It isn't really difficult, but you will need to get a "Mity Vac", or similar product for vacuum troubleshooting. You might have to remove the dash, but that isn't that bad.

Could be a bad switch. Its located behind the radio and climate control. You can check the rest of the pods there too.

Here is how I fixed mine. Remove the glovebox. With that removed you can see the duct going to the center vents. Push the flap open with a screwdriver through the center vent and run a drywall screw through the duct just ahead of the flap to prevent it from closing.

Do what Omegaman said in addition to plugging the abandoned line going to the pod. If you want the center vents shut then just use the handwheel. Works GREAT.

Ok so for the first time since i have had the car, the center vents blew air. Although half way to work they stopped again and I couldnt get them to work again. I will try the flap this weekend.

You know this reminds me, now that the weather has changed, I am noticing I have no heat from the center vents, (not to hijack this thread but) I know I have seen postings on this before somewhere, but cant recall where, anyone have a link handy? I am sure it isn't vacuum related as all other aspects of door locks and engine shutoff etc. are working very well, and door locks will still unlock after sitting for a few hours.

The CCU was designed/programmed to close the center vents when heat is selected.
I found out that when I turn my dial to heat my car won't shutoff. Have a vac leak somewhere to find......

oddly enough, mine was set to about 70 degrees when i left for work this morning, and was blowing air right out the center vents (for the first time I might add), and when i switched to 60-65 degrees, the center vents closed, and I havent been able to get them open yet. Bah!

This is starting to sound more like an intermittent caused by a cracked solder joint in the pushbutton unit. The circuit boards are arranged in an "H" pattern and the solder joints tend to crack where they meet.

Make sure your getting vacuum to the CCU switches. Make sure your CCU isn't fried because the aux. water pump locked up and fried the board. Just somethings I ran across on mine.

Almost guaranteed to be a bad vacuum pod, but you can check by applying vacuum with a Mity-Vac to all 7 ports at the manifold behind the glovebox (or passenger airbag). I've done this a half-dozen times on as many cars. Full details, including part numbers, and a link to photos of the project, are here:
