bad thermostat?
During normal driving now that the temperatures have dropped I do not get up to 80C on the temp guage. Actually yesterday I drove probably 20 miles on 60 - 70 mph and still wasn't up to 80C. I know that the temp guages are not totally accurate, but I would think that would get me there if the thermostat actually worked. How long does it normally take to get up 80 when everything is working normally? I'm pretty sure the water pump works since I would overheat if it wasn't. I'm also thinking of replacing the stock block heater with the one Diesel Giant has, and was figuring that would be a good thing to do at the same time. Any thoughts?

Try to find someone with a Infra-Red temp' gun or just go ahead and replace the 'stat...it's cheap and easy to do....... then see if anything changed.
Should warm up to normal ( 80C. ) in about 2 to 3 miles at hi way speeds. .

When I had a bad stat it would stay around 60C in the winter and I would only get luke warm heat. With a good stat, I get to 80C in less than 5 minutes regardless of outside temperature.
