606 - Injector interchangeability?
Hi guys, just registered on the forum (although not completely new to it),
Are the injectors on my OM606.962 1999 E300 TD the same as on the 96-97 E300 606 or 95 E300? On www.mbwholesaleparts.com the injectors for the 98-99 are part #A0000100651, while for the 96-97 606.912 and 1995 606.910 they are #A0000100551. Are these interchangeable? Do those for the 98-99 have something special because of the turbocharged motor? The reason I ask is because I've seen them online for the 95 and 96-97, but never for the 98-99. Thanks, and enjoy your MB diesels!

Fairly certain they are different. I know those from a old 300D cannot be swapped to a 300Dtd.
Whats wrong that you are wanting to change them?

They may have the same shape, but I'm pretty sure the pop pressure is different. Typically on a turbodiesel the pop pressure is higher. What you could do is buy the ones for the non-turbo and then adjust them for the higher pressure but that sounds like more trouble than it's worth. You should definitely check your existing injectors first and most likely they will be fine or they may just need some cleaning.

Thanks DieselAddict, that's a good explanation as to the difference...
I've also heard about several internal modifications from the nonturbo to the turbo, such as piston-cooling oil jets in the block. I've seen the 96-97 injectors for $60-70 online, but the dealer and Mercedesshop's Phil gave me a price in the $360 range EACH And as to why I'm replacing them, there is a lot of knocking throughout the whole length of the motor, but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to take em out and check them first. Also I've heard a number around 100k miles for replacing injectors and mine haven't been done yet.

If you use decent fuel (not water contaminated) injectors should last a lot longer than 100K miles. It's always a good idea to test them first for two reasons. Your old ones will probably be fine, and the new ones may be worse as their quality is hit-and-miss (the nozzles are built in India nowadays).
$360 per injector?? I'm assuming you meant 6 injectors. You can also just replace the nozzles but you'll definitely need to pop test the injectors afterward. But then again you should test them anyway even if you buy them as a whole.

I agree, I think the $360 price was for 6 injectors...I mean, what could be so different about the turbo ones that the price would be 6x greater? It's more logical that the price is for all 6.
It's not exactly the spray patterns I am worried about (some injector cleaner cleared that up earlier this week), it's the spring tension inside the injectors. I've read before on the forum where someone replaced their injectors and had tremendous overall gains ("the car feels like new" effect). Anyone have experiences with replacing injectors?

Mine are at 191K OE. I have no intention replacing them until they exhibit some sort of problem.
Too often injecters are replaced for no good reason. Balancing pop pressures might result in an improvement due to springs becoming tired with age. Am certain there is a diesel truck shop in Sacto that can do that for you, probably while you wait.

Part of injector testing is checking the pop pressure which depends on the spring tension. Both of my Benzes have what I believe are original injectors and all of them had sufficient pop pressure when I tested them. Only two of the 240D's injectors had less than optimal spray pattern so I just replaced their nozzles.

Alright, so it sounds like checking the pop pressures and spray patterns are the first steps.
I'm guessing this requires the special tool listed in MB WIS (looks kinda like a bike pump)? Maybe I'll look for it later, I know I've seen it before.

You can also buy an injector tester on Ebay or elsewhere online. That's what I did. Or find a local diesel injection shop and see if they're trustworthy.
