Exclamation Maintenance, comment....

Folks,

Weather was nice here today, so I decided to do some more maintenance with my newly arrived parts stash.....

I decided to change the Impact Strip Holder on one side of my rear bumper...looked up the job on my trusty MB W123 Maintenance Library...could only find reference to the "Euro" style bumpers.....anyhow, found out how to remove those side bumper ends.....and went about doing that....

FOUND HIDDEN RUST !!!

My 300D has no rust visible on exterior.....well with a tiny spot or two by windshield and rear window corners.....was surprised to fine a nice young colony of rust under the trunk innards.....and the bumper end support is rusty to the point that I don't wanna fool with saving it......will replace, just added it to "the List"......

Had not seen this area mentioned here before.....did not search it, tho....

Thought soneone might wanna peek in their trunk innards.....just to see if everything is OK in there......

Havin' Fun
SB

BTW.....what a PTA that bumper strip holder can be.....now I know why I don't do body work.....and thank God for a selection of Rubber Hammers!!!!

That little piece that holds the rubber bumper corner on are known to rust out. The early cars had painted ones and the later ones were zinc plated. They still rust out though. I think they fill with crud over the years and it holds the moisture in which promotes rust.

It was also inside trunk....

The main point I wanted to make was/is that under the plastic inner liner of the rear fender.....was a bit of rust.....found it accidentally, didn't know to look there......one of the first things that I replaced was the "Antenna Gromet"......but as I understand, from reading here, trunks are known to be leaky......

I can see why those Bumper Supports would be rusty, had not given it that much thought......my undercoating is 95+% intact, and original.....have been concentrating on mechanical M&R.....

Mercedes rust from the inside out. Thats why total rust buckets like my SD can still look decent to the laymen.
