Considering how cold it gets in your neck of the woods I'd use Mobil 1 0w40. It is diesel rated don't worry its 20 times better than what your car came from the factory with.

Mobil 1 ATF also flows and shifts extremly well at extremly cold temps.

Any oil with a CI-4PLUS rating should be great for any diesel and anything but the most extreme conditions.

compression starts

personally i run straight 40W in everything diesel along with a quart of lucas in the vehicles and a gallon of lucas in the boat engines Every engine I own is 20 years old and worked like a dog none have had a rebuilt yet Just luck? I think not Oh wait the 6.5 in the truck is only 7 years old but it has 200000 on it beat that dawg
So I think nothing beats cold weather starts like functioning glow plugs block heaters and compression

How does she crank over with straight 40 at -10 degrees? Need to light a fire under the oil pan to get things moving?

i think if you got caught out without a place to plug in at 20 below you would have a seriuos problem with turning it over.

i am a little reluctant to go with weights that the mfgr did not design for such as 0w40 in an older car.

Check the container and ensure that the oil is rated either CH or CI. These oils will do the proper job for you.

If you want a decent synthetic oil at a reasonable price, consider Rotella-syn, 5W-40.

If cost is no object, consider Delvac-1. AFAIK, you won't find M-1 in 10W-40 with the CH or CI rating.
Found the Delvac-1 at Sam's in Pittsburgh this weekend. Could be a regional thing but it would be worth a try. They are very low priced on most things within the store. My apologies, but I did not get a price. I buy rottela dyno there for 4 gallons @$27 bucks. Hope this helps.

M1 5W40 is available by special order... sortof. it is included in any sale prices for mobil 1 oils. at advance auto parts. I have them keep a few dozen quarts in stock for me. in order for them to order it for you, you need to have the stock # or they never can find it in the computer for you. I had them search and search, finally I had them organize it by manufacturer and they found it. last purchase was at 5.18/quart. if you can't get them to find it in their computer, I can list a stock # for you.

You should not have any worries about running 0W-40 in an older diesel MB, MB requires that it be used in all new MBs, and highly recommends but doesn't require it for older models.

M-1 0w40 for my next oil change. bought 8 qts 2 months ago. just waiting for it to get colder, and to rack up the miles on the rotella in there.

i may use it year round. about $12 cheaper per oilchange than M-1 T&suv 5w40
