617 Cam timing
Does anyone know how far the cam can be advanced without mech interference?

It can be retarded up to 8* through chain elongation.
Whatever you decide to do, turn it by hand before you use the starter! |

I don't think I'll ever go that far. May be limited to the offset woodruff keys available and the present chain stretch. I'm thinking there will be a big gap in available advance keys vs moving the gear one tooth and using the a key to retard. How many teeth on the cam gear? Turning by hand is a given... even then, it can be close cold but things could touch when warm. ![]() My plan is to check the current timing and log some mileage, performance figures now. Then document any change(s) made. I think the in town drivability could be improved a bit by advancing the valve timing which would move the torque curve down closer to off idle rpm. |

1 tooth is 18* measured at the crank.

It can be advanced or retarded by one tooth........and possibly more........so at least +/- 18° at the crank.

Thats a lot of room to move. Sound like the cam could be a little bigger.
![]() As soon as this head cold/upper resp crap clears up I'm going after it with the dial guage. The 1985 IP looks like a real PIA to get to the back mounting bolt. |
