Lightbulb More HubcapNess

seeing the thread from sirnik84 http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=169987 got me to thinking about one of the great unsolved w123 mysteries.......how the hell did they paint the hubcaps......i am sure we have all seen handpainted efforts with wonky lines and bits missing..( i have a set on mine) but how did mercedes do it....this has bothered me for years now....please someone put me out of my misery!!!

I imagine they have a precision cover that fits over the star and ring.

It's not a "hubcap", it's called a Wheel Cover when used on a Mercedes.

the brand...

They had a special tool that looks like a cattle brand... no longer available and rare as hen's teeth

lol "wheelcover" then....call it what you like.......how did they paint the little buggers? i like the sound of "precision covers" that's about as far as i got ...devious buggers those germans you know!!

this is what i need to know....what did that special too look like....i swear it must be a state secret or something!!! i doesn't matter how much masking tape a man has....he still can't match that teutonic finish

The tool I examined at a flea market looked like the application was for repainting but might have been used for production too. I kind of remember or thought it might have been a two piece set. Anyways for the few I repaint decided not to buy it. I use thin line masking tape for starters. A little tedious but results ore okay if you pay attention.

They make a blue plastic narrow tape that doesn't let paint soak underneath. Thats what I used to paint mine.

thats what im going to use to transform a set that is mocca to anthacrite grey soon

i got 4 hub caps today from surf n turf.. i need 2 extras since one is slightly dented.. and an extra would be nice to have
