what to look for in a used OM617 turbo?
I've tried posting this several times, but it just won't come up... maybe this time.
I'm going to use a 5cyl turbo for a conversion in my Rover. What should I look at buying a used OM617 turbo? What is the best indicator for a good vs. worn-out motor? Compression? What are some desireable compression numbers on the cylinders? I'm looking at one that the seller claims has 450 on all five cylinders... sounds a little high to me. What do you guys think? Help me find a good motor!!! Thanks for any help! Ethan |
Yeah, I'd check the compression, if you can, check the timing chain stretch and the cams and see if the turbo impeller has any play in it

Thanks...
What is the ideal compression? What's the minimum psi I should stay away from? |
What about the answers on your original thread??

cold compression minimum about 220 to start and run. excellent from 300 to 330. hot compression numbers may go up to near 400psi.
