Too much oil? wrong dipstick? wtf?

Okay -- so I'm chaning my oil -- follow the directions (yes i'm a newbie) on diesel giant's site -- pulled the filter -- drain the pan (takes forever) -- check to see how much the car holds -- 7.9 quarts-- add it -- check the dipstic -- seems to be way high -- but my dipstick looks different than my friends 82 300sd (mines an 83) and different that what seems to be shown in the manuel.

mine has two small lines on it -- not terribly far apart -- where the manuel shows the notch configuration.

okay -- so did i put too much in? a friend mentioned there might still be oil in the cooler.

what now?

It is possible you have an after market dipstick. Did you check the level using your friends dipstick? The correct one should be a flat blade type with notches in it, and have a white finger pull. Also the car does need to be level.

The oil cooler will not drain if you don't disconnect it.
I just changed my oil yesterday. Drained the pan and the oil cooler added 2 gallons and it's right in the middle of the 2 marks.

hmmm -- the end on mine is red has the little lever thing that locks on to the tube -- but it definitely has 2 lines and no notches. I'll try to check with my friends stick.

how much oil is in the cooler?

The oil dipstick on the 617 engine is on the drivers side towars the front of the car. It's really close to the fuel filters and the oil fill cap, close to the valve cover.

If you put the full capacity in, you will probably have a bit too much oil. It seems that roughly one half-liter doesn't drain out due to the oil cooler and/or oil cooler lines.

At least that's my experience on my car.

Hmmm

Remove the old oil filter.
Drain the oil (fifteen minutes) at the pan plug.
Install the seal and drain plug.
Install the new filter and filter seals.
Add eight quarts of oil.
Wait fifteen minutes, then check the oil level.

This is your correct oil level on the OM617.

It's EMD's Demonstrator SD-45 #4353. I'm a RR nut, and I have a pic of this locomotive in it's demo paint on the Pennsylvania RR, which I have family history on through my great grandfather, grand father and great uncle. Only my great uncle is still living. My great grandfather started working on the PRR in 1923 after coming home from WWI.

Good catch on the Avatar!

checked it last night -- is at the very top of the second notch when nice and warm -- maybe a tad too much -- but not way over

That should be fine then, just don't go over the upper notch.
