I have been offered a 1985 190D for very little $$.
While I know there is no such thing as a cheap Mercedes, I am interested enough to check it out.

Are there any major issues or special things I need to be aware of with this model other than the usual obvious safety items ?

I can tell you from experience that the climate control system is a bear. It is way too complex. If the system in the car that you are considering is not operating properly, make sure that you take the diagnosis and repair of it very seriously. Otherwise, I have not had any problems that a decent DIY couldn't handle. Great car, fun to drive, fantastic fuel economy.
