87 300 SDL with 350 FI

My Current project is a 1987 300 SDL (267K) that I just replaced the cyl head (017), IP and injectors (from a 350), and Bosio nozzles. I am very satisfied with the quiet idle of the Bosios and extremely satisfied with the stoplight acceleration of the 350 pump and injectors. I seem to be getting identical fuel mileage that I got with the stock 300 FI of 19 city and 24-25 highway. I wonder what changes would yield better fuel economy and of course not compromise the performance?

Do a search on the increased mpg thing. There really isn't much you can do to get a substantial increase. Bravo on the IP/head/injectors project. Nothing like swapping in factory parts for better performance. Very cool. RT

Check your timing, the mileage is off but not that far.

I am assuming you installed the angle injectors? Not quite sure why they did that, I assume emissions.

The timing is right on spec per MB IP light. I am thinking of addressing the exhaust system next. It has the newer trap and a new rear muffler but I have not checked for restriction in between. It acts alot like a slight exhaust restriction because the power goes flat above 4000 rpm.

Could be, do you have your ALDA cranked up a lot by any chance? If so back it off a bit and see if mileage improves. These cars should pull real strong up to about 4,800 rpm, something is off.

Your about 2-3mpg off where you should be.

Not sure where you are but if they use winter fuel in your area expect a drop in mileage.

After a few trips on the highway, the car has done a best of 26.4 mpg. The engine is running very smooth and starts easily in 25 degree weather. I have not had a chance to test for exhaust restriction but I hope to in Feb.

I have a 350 long block with damaged front cover. The oil pump chain failed. I am not sure if there is any main bearing saddle damage. The components are still assembled. I also have an extra 350 IP that came off of a good running engine (overheated).

I agree with the mileage numbers. I can stretch my 300SDL to over 30MPG during the summer, and the last tank was 28, with mostly highway driving 70-75MPH. I'm sure the fuel is not as good as summer fuel since I put 5 gallons of my BioD in last week and the SOP measurement was noticeable. You could really feel the power difference !!
The MPG seems higher too, even with the B40 +/- blend.

I have a 86 300 SDL and am considering the same modification,Is there anything else you needed to get the parts to fit?
