interest

I'm interested in a set for my 1984 300D. I'd definitely want a lowering of 25 to 35mm from stock.

Can you post the spring rate(s), unsprung length, and any other specific information about these springs? I'd like to see what these will do to my car in the spreadsheet I have.

Thanks

Lightbulb Boing...

John,

I'd love to share it. Here is the spreadsheet I developed at the beginning of the year to find how much to cut off springs found at the junkyard to match my specs.

I was planning on using springs from a 126 chassis and cutting them, since many start with thicker wire diameter than 123 springs and will have higher spring rate at the same ride height. I never really set down goals in terms of spring rate adjustment because I learned front springs are not interchangeable from 123s and 126s because of coil diameter. I later learned of Coil Spring Specialties, but was very busy this summer and autumn. I'm honestly not sure what change in spring rate (k) is desired with my 25-35mm proposed ride drop.

Anyway, check it out. The idea was to play with part numbers until a good combination using the F and R curves was found, then cut the springs as desired while maintaining equal F/R ride height change. I found all the data from the W123 and W126 FSM. Changes in ride height with respect to spring length were found here http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showpost.php?p=84018&postcount=5. Note this is only developed so far for constant rate springs. Also, I've yet to weigh my car sequentially at a truckstop, so the F/R weight distribution figure is only an estimate .

Have fun!

It would be really nice to seal this deal by mid January, so that we can have them by Spring break, in march.

Vogtland Springs

Rudolf

Hey, this sounds interesting, but!!! I recall that I bought some Vogtland springs for my 124 for less then $300.00 retail. I wouldn't mind some on my 123, but if Vogtland can't do better selling by the dozen, hmmmmm.

Keep me posted, but I think there are other (less prestigious but viable) springs available for less.

Ric

I am interested..

Sounds like a good idea, I have a 82 300d.
I would like to see the spring specs, and $300 is definately in my price range. When you get all that info count me in.

Thumbs up Update

Essentials of today's email.. Vogtland in italics, my response back. All productive feedback appreciated.

We presently have the 4 cyl. application designed. 200 - 230 model. I believe that these would only be Grey Market cars.

Designed for the Diesels? 114 chassis Gasoline, 115 chassis Diesels.
The 115 chassis covers models 200/220D through '73, 240D through '75, and 300D through '76.
These springs would definitely work for the 123 240D (4 cylinder 616), with minor modification.

The front rate is 47 N/mm (268 lb/in) and the Rear is 62 N/mm (354 lb/in)

Many thanks for the hard numbers, will definitely be posting these on the forum. Let you know about any feedback.

Most US models were either 6 cyl. or Diesel. We figured that these would be pretty close as far as front load. The big difference would the 4 dr. vs. Coupe. I assume that spring pads could take care of the difference in ride height. We have preliminary design data as well for these. We were targeting 49 - 51 N/mm (285 lb/in) and 64 N/mm (365 lb/in) front and rear respectively.

Some 124 Diesel folks tried using your 6cyl Gasoline application with poor results because of lowered ride height.
It was concluded that this was due to the increased weight of the Diesel engine (5cylinder 602, 6cylinder 603).
There are three different spring pads to change ride height in the rear. Most were interested in a moderate 30-35mm drop.

I need 5 sets of four.None of my cars are really in desperate need, but I'll do them all if they're not outragiously priced. My total number now is three 300cd's but looking at a 240 coupe, and have a fourth 300cd in transit now,out of Southern Texas.I'll be up to five 123's by feb.1st.Love these friggin 123 coupes, especially the 300cd's.
