i dont disagree with the diesel dog on much but i do on this. these diesels are quite comfy cruising around town at lower rpm. i dont hesitate to take them to the hash marks on shifts if i have a reason to but i dont do it every time just becasue i like to. my cars get exercised on the highway enough to keep them well blown out. no special "italian tune ups" needed.

Bill,
Its hard to quantify acceleration w/o numbers, but my 240D was adequate. I might have called it stately or reserved. No one would every call it fast or quick, but rarely did it seem dangerously slow. Can you post some benchmark numbers--like 0-60 on a flat road, average of several runs in opposite directions? Maybe we could see that your 240 isn't quite up to snuff. If it is down on power compared to other 240Ds, you might want to check the injection timing.

How do I put this politely? You don't need to take everyone's advice too seriously. With free advice, you sometimes get what you pay for. You may want to take a quick look at people's previous posts and judge their veracity for yourself. After a while you'll get to know who is to be taken seriously. These engines run very well within reasonable rpm ranges, and under normal conditions you can (and should) shift to higher gears well below the shift marks on the speedo. No-one would seriously consider running these engines at normal rpms (anything above about 2000) as lugging them. Running them to maximum rpm routinely is not helpful to the engine's longevity, your mileage, or anyone's ears. Although these engines are pretty tough, they will not put up with being abused indefinitely. Most of the adults on this forum get many years/miles of service from these cars by driving them at reasonable rpms, and in the correct gears. It sounds like your shift points are just fine, don't worry about it. |

I don't mind the lack of acceleration on my 240D. It is kinda fun, and it is certainly anything but point and shoot. I do enjoy puttering around, slowing up traffic in general, stinking, smoking, rattling, and generally being obnoxious. It's really a blast. And even shutting it off is a hoot: I have a vac leak in the driver's side door lock so to shut off, i put on E-brake, take it out of gear, lock the door, turn down the idle, rev the engine, pull the key, let off, and it sputters and dies. 100% comic to anyone that hasn't ridden with me yet. I also agree the car can take whatever you give it, but I just wondered what that did to the engine life. I should use gears to slow me down more though. That is good advice to save the brakes. I heard something along time ago about tearing a fuel diaphram by doing that, is this a concern? I can't remember where I heard that. It is fun to hear about other 240D's running around. I have yet to see another W123 in my town at all. Kind of sad.
