You know, I was reading Carrameow's thread about his poor gas mileage, and I think you've hit the nail on the head.

All of those successive coats of paint have added so much extra weight to the car, that he's lost 5 - 10 mpg in fuel economy.

We Americans are so sentimental about friggin cars. Buy it and drive it, thats the only way to really enjoy a car.
Garage queens, what a waste of time. Oh you scratched my paint.....
Oh I hit a pothole.

Sold a 78 Super Beetle in June, mars red. Had 16K on it when I got it. Drove it for 3 years, and put about 5k on it, and sold it for what I had into. Great investment. Many memories of chasing Hot Air Ballons with my daughter, Grandby drive thorough animal zoo.......

Life's short......

I wonder what the condition of the rubber parts in the engine are in with the age and low mileage. I would think that in many ways driving these cars regularly is the best way to preserve them.

It's my opinion that ANY car is better off driven on a regular basis!...

But I do understand the idea of preservation of a nice automobile. Just my .02

PS: It IS a beautiful speciman though

Better than another example with 100k miles on it and seals of the same age. Besides who cares thats the cheap stuff. If you are so inclined you could tear apart that engine and replace all the seals for what $4k? Why would you looks like one of the cleanist 617's I have ever seen. Still thats nothing try restoring a tired interior to that condition. You are not getting parts that nice out of a junk yard. You would spend $2k on wood alone. Not to mention a car is only factory new once.

Nope that car is far better than one that was driven, simply because all the super expensive stuff that counts, the interior and body are 100% factory.

I can see spending $30k with thousands of hours worth of labor, to get an average driver to factory 100 point condition. And it still wouldn't be original.

The seller just ended the auction early to sell to the highest bidder.

$30,000.00.

Higher than I thought it was going to go.

Then again, I only paid $6,500 for the Beetle and sold it for $8,000 which is what I had into it.

To each his own.

After the guy gets the car home and starts to unravel the Technical Stuff inside it, he will soon be posting on this Forum......The only thing that makes me terrified to buy a Car on Ebay is this...I need to smell, test drive, pop the hood, and meet the seller......I need a test drive and a look underneath.
Intuition is good too, sometimes in a few minutes I know what I have by looking at the car and the owner....but pictures on Ebay--Forget it...
