What's the "Floored" Speed/RPM of a 83 to 85 300D?
 

What's the "Floored" Speed of a 83 to 85 300D? Having redone my chain, pulled and retimed my pump, adjusted my valves and finally having getting that nice Diesel "tick tick tick tick" at idle, I want to make sure my top end is optimized.
I do remember cruising down the Turnpike at 85 mph effortlessly at 85 mph and relatively low (3500 RPM) two years ago before my car went into full overhaul.
This morning on the way in, it was chugging hard to hit 70 and it was at 3400 rpm, and I need to adjsut my Linkage.

I've never tried it with mine, but I've read other posts on here stating 102-105mph @ 5200rpm. Apparently the 617 is good for more but the IP can't deliver any more fuel.

according to this little book ALL 1985 USA 123.133 are fitted with the 2.88 Differential Ratio.....

I've gotten REAL close to 110. On the longest slope around ;). And thats in a NA 300D. My wifes car 300TD goes all the way to 85 and then some.

I've gone flat out 5200rpm/112mph for about 5-6 miles before....its amazing...feels like your in a jet or something. :D :D The engine switches from a diesel sound to more of a turbine sound! :D :D Its a great Italian tuneup too. ;)

NA you say... cool. the most I have gotten out of my NA TD is about 95 on a good flat area with a downhill slant toward the end.
I gotta replace all the vibrating items in the driveline before I do that again.

Sounds like it's time to check your boost and to verify the injection pump is being enriched. On the otherhand it might just be partially obstructed fuel filters or tank screen. Since you have been residing under your hood. Make sure you have not disturbed the linkage as well. It is advancing the pump lever fully from the pedal? You may have rolled over in your sleep and bent it for example. By now you have learnt with experience that if it is not one thing it is another. This in my opinion is the wrong attitude. I always just hope the next item is easier when going into the present one. Thats why these cars were designated 123s with mercedes forsight. If you are on problem 2 that month it allows you to reflect back to problem 1 and at the same time wonder what problem 3 is going to be if you are unaware at present.:dizzy2: On second thought do not touch it. I can pass you now with either one of my 240ds :D

Thats great,ive always known the design reason for the mb hoods to have the grill attached to the hood,a good dope slap when you get tired or unalert..:dizzy2:

You may have missed the most intrinsic feature of the hood. When in the full up position. I finally figured out it was a compliment by the germans to the french justice system if it ever fell on you.:behead: Thats the real reason why the grill is bolted to the hood.:D They really mean it when they state it is engineered like no other car in the world.:eek: They just missed sharpening the lower edge of the grill. There is still time left yet to rectify their oversight on future models.;)

You are absolutely right......because come to think of that I had a similar problem with a 87 300D. When I fixed it it jumped from 70 mph top speed to 100 plus ez--so I am going to check it--that white line at the back of the intake manifold, comes around the back of the engine and goes to the IP

My wife once told me I was absolutly right. I of course immediatly battened down the hatches.:D I just try to make a valid contribution from time to time. The adding of a little levity is to moderate the stress and frustation that can occur while in the middle af a problem. If I were smarter it might be like water rolling off a duck. But I am not. Other than understanding that if I get mad or frustrated with a problem I loose. My knowledge is minimal. I also find it very hard to venture an opinion as the only insite into the individual is by what he has previously posted. Also I am physically removed from the problem so my senses of feel, sound and sight are not allowed to aid what little judgement I posess. A while ago I suspected you already knew the cause of your problem but could not grasp it. I was not sure of the cause but suspected you really might have been aware of it. Your experience on this model car led me to that conclusion for one thing. So I got out on a limb and thats why I qualified it as not really sure I should respond to your post. I always encourage newcomers as well to start to work on their own cars. That way they will bond with their cars. There are far worse things to get involved with and by and large our wifes are somewhat tollerent of the activity. One of my favorite expressions. The road to restoration is paved with dollar bills. I advocate that newcombers again have the destination well targeted and understood before travelling on that road. A person should do at least one partial refubishment just to gain the insite of what the whole trip would involve. You have done that. It is a loss to themselves if they do not. The educational component alone is worth the trip. You have kind of partially inoculated yourself from being ripped off as well. It will of course still happen from time to time but at least you are then aware of it. I watch people get ripped off almost on a daily basis unfortunatly. They posses no awareness at all it is occuring. Another skill it promotes is learning the art of buying cheap during parts hunting. There are many many more skills involved as well. That knowledge and ability impacts other components of your life very heavily. Keep starting new threads as they are interesting and informative and make people think. I know I learn a lot from them. Although you cannot paint my car.:D Now that was a classic. This site is also a premium quiz show. The only difference from a normal one is we all win. I hope this site goes on for future generations.

The one thing thats surprising me is how many things that I have known and no longer know...I guess either that means I know my share of things or more likely, that I am having MEMORY Loss....

That white Line runs through a Solenoid which usually gets clogged. Either that or the white line gets clogged or the fitting.

Last I thank you very much for hitting the nail on the head because I would be spending all weekend checking my Turbocharger....

Thanks for the comments and kind words. Yes it will be an exceptional weekend. We will go out to the beach this late afternoon and do the final shutdown of the cottage for the winter. Perhaps a little wine with dinner out there. It is still 70 degrees here this week but next week will be different. Sunday a couple of guys that have posted on site will drop by the house from separate destinations. This is a first for me. I have become used to fellows at the front door on a pretty regular basis seeking this and that for their mercedes vehicles in the last year. They are locals and do not use our site that I know of. If things allow it I will drive to attend some of the get togethers in the next year or two. I really want to meet some of the site participants personally. My email relating to diesel mercedes is getting heavier as well. On another tack. Just finished repairs to the solor system. It has functioned faultlessly for twenty five years. Produces about 200,000 btu daily average in the winter. The equipment to redo headlight reflectors and simular items keeps arriving on an almost daily basis. Some items are hard to source but overall it goes well. Oddly enough we will be able to do them three different ways. Primarily an interest for the son in law as I cannot find the time to participate heavily long term.. Two of the methods are extremely durable. In otherwords there is always something interesting going on here. Thats the way I like it.
