Snow? I saw it once here in 1988 - all the Publix employees came outside to see this white fluffy, and cold, stuff falling from the sky and coating everything in a thin blanket.
Thank goodness that I had just moved to Fla. about 9 months earlier, or I would've freaked.

I like to plus size my tires, as I like the handling better. Years ago, I put some sort of Sears/Michelin tire on the 300D and it felt like it was on rails during heavy downpours on I-75. They don't carry that tread design anymore, so I've switched to Khumo's for now on the 420 and BFG T/A's on the 300D. I don't really have any complaints with the T/A's, but I can't say that I am overly enthusiastic about them either - I guess you could say they are "just another tire". For the money, I am happy with the Khumo's (205's) for now. Next trip to the tire store will most likely yield a brand change for both cars. (what, I have no idea - but I will stick with 205's vs. 195's)

When I first got the 300D (about 8 years ago) I put on a set of Goodyear Regrettas. Ride and handling was OK, but they kept blowing out the inside sidewalls. I went through 5 of them in a year. During that year they changed to the Regretta 2's. They had the same problems. They kept blaming it on road hazards, so they wouldn't warranty them. I eventually gave up and switched to another brand and have not had a tire problem since. No more Goodyear Maypop's for me.

Why compromise a fine German road car with the wrong tires? Get something half decent in the correct size. The little bit extra price is well worth it for the improvement in handling and safety.

For whatever it is worth to relay, I am very happy with my new set of Michelin HydroEdge 195/70 TR14's. They are fantastically gripping in the rain and smooth, responsive and stable on the highway!

Get some 195/70/14 Goodyear TriplTreds and be happy!

They are hands-down the best All-Season out there in my book.

PawoSD will second me on this!

henrydupont, you didn't say which car you were talking about with these tires. On the 1980 300SD, I think the OEM size was 185R14 (a 75% ratio sidewall), but those were pretty hard to find in the US, so they generally got replaced with 195-75R/14. Now, people prefer 205-70R/14, which have the same circumference as 195-75R/14. The most important thing on a big, heavy Benz is to use a speed rating of at least H. (You could use U, but that's uncommon.) A speed rating of S or T (or lower) can be unsafe.

I'm about to mount up a set of Michelin Harmony tires, in the stock size, but I have a question for you all.

I kept hearing that it should have H or better rating, but when I looked in my owners manual, it specifies S or better. What gives?

I do understand that they won't be as stiff as a tire rated H, V, Z, or what have you, but honestly, how many of us are truely expecting sports car behaviour out of our ~4000lb land yachts?
If I want to sling around tight corners, that's what a small and much more powerful car is for. The MB is for the trips where you want to get there safely, smoothly, and enjoy not getting beaten along the way by the lousy highways!

studded hakkapallita 10's, amazing snow tire. Put 4 on and you'll notice a different vehicle in the snow.

G'mornin',

I had read about this "may pop" condition....both here and elsewhere on the net (I did a search after reading here).....I hate to toss tires with really good tread (and pay to toss them as well $2 each, here in WV)....so I have been running the Regatta 2 and they just don't seem to wear much on the tread....thus I will live with them for now.....

Did you have any indications that your tires were gonna fail....before the actual failure??? Did you keep up with tire pressure....I've been running 30psi front and 32psi rear......will be making a 1500 mile trip to N'awlins for Thanksgiving, just finished inspecting the tires for any abnormalities.....trip will be a tad over 3000 miles of Highway driving....and probably another few hundred miles of city/counrty driving....I just dislike having to deal with any sort of mechanical or tire problem while traveling.

Thanx,
SB

Michelin X-Radials here. Stock size and all, they feel kind of mushy. And they take real nerves of steel to stop the car in a hurry when its raining and wet and you're on the highway. You can swerve at surprisingly high speeds though. I think I had adrenaline through my veins for a whole minute after that. All you 300SDL dudes should thank the stars that you have ABS.
