I'm Back.....long.. new 1986 300 SDL with issues
Good morning all............
I have returned to Ca. from Virginia with the 1986 300 SDL I bought in this thread. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=169928 The car was not quite as good as described but I did get the seller to put a brand new set of Michelins on it. Overall I am very pleased with it. The car ran very well going across country and returned 26 MPG including going through the intense storms across Tenn. and Ar. and then a constant headwind from Ok. through most of Az. All the while pusing 75 to 80. The power is quite suprising after it reaches 15 - 20 mph. It just pulls and pulls (until the fuel starvation kicks in, see below). It is smoother then I expected. There are a few mechanical issues including fuel starvation going uphill, into the wind, at 80 mph. On flat ground doing 80 - 85, no problem maintaining speed. Fuel filters are ordered and I will do the lines if that doesn't fix it. The steering wheel shakes when applying the brakes at speed, rotors and steering dampener are ordered. The brake pads look brand new F & R but the mech. didn't change or machine the rotors. It used some oil coming across and appears to be a turbo seal issue. If it is burning it, it is diluted enough that there is no blue smoke (i. e. a slow but steady stream from the turbo seals). Blow-by is non-existant, the cap just sits there loose, with no movement, when the engine is warm and running, revved up too. Oil is weeping at the joints of the intake pipe that crosses the engine to the intake manifold. The issue I would like to address first and ask your help diagnosing is a combined issue of the criuse control and tach. The tach constantly reads about 50% too fast. It shows 1100 at idle and 5500 rpm at 70 mph . It goes beyond 6000 rpm when floored and the trans shifts at it highest shift points. The tach is always smooth and steady, just reading too fast. The criuse control either works correctly (holding the car at 80 mph into a head wind) or doesn't work at all. It always works after first starting the car and will work for varying length's of time from 15 minutes to a couple of hours. All the different functions of the criuse work correctly when it is working. The reason I have lumped them together is that they are on the same feeder circuit (fuse). The fuse is good and when removing it neither function works at all. I am hoping you folks can point me in the right direction and towards a simple fix to straighten them out. I plan on removing the cluster next week to check for grounds but my gut feeling is that the problem(s) is somewhere else. All the other dash functions work properly. I have above average mechanical abilities and tools. I was a professional mechanic years ago and went to diesel engine school. Thank you and I look forward to your responses
