240D loses power
lately, i've been driving my 240d very sporadically, due to the fact that every time i take it out for more than 5 minutes, the car loses power and shuts down. i haven't put diesel purge or injector cleaner in in a while. is that my problem, or is it something else? thanks.

more likely, it's fuel filters or an air leak.

Your tank strainer may be plugged.

Airleak from the fuel filter benjo bolt is a probable cause. Mind was sucking in air after I had my fuel filter replaced. I re-torqued it and the problem was solved.

The tank strainer is on the right side of the car directly underneath the tank (slightly behind the seat) on the underbody. It can be accessed with a 43 or 46 (I can't remember) mm socket or by loosening the line that comes from the strainer to the fuel line. That line is generally rusted onto the strainer making it easy to take the strainer out- no extra sockets required.
For the clear plastic filter- yes you should replace it. It is more than likely your problem. The can filter takes a lot of junk to clog, and most of the junk will be caught in the inexpensive small plastic filter, hence its use. This site has them for two bucks- Bosch ones too.

Well dangitall, if I'd known that I'd have gone through mine, I figured it was down in the tank all this time......like a fuel sock. 80 240D w/617 motor |

Someone already beat me to the punchline....
just saw the topic and thought "What power?" But seriously, might be fuel lines. If all the hoses look ok (including the ones in the rear from the tank) check the steel fuel lines and make sure one didn't get pinched shut or rusted.
