Post High power OM60x

Simply put, I am going to buy either a W124 OM606 (if I can find one) or an '87 W201 with the turbo 5 cyl. From what I've been reading the 603's don't get as good a power output as the the 606's, but it all depends on the type of car I can find.

I will:
-Build it with a large but streetable turbo setup, aiming for ~350hp initially.
-Once it's set up and reliable, put it through some paces running a good clean SVO setup.
-Upgrade the car with the "AMG Conversion" to improve the handling (unless you guys suggest something better), along with AMG exterior bits and Monoblocks.

I have:
-A large income, no kids or responsiblities, enough said. Unless it's 100% fab work, I don't mind paying for it.
-No idea where to start

I see spots of information everywhere about people doing this, but it's mostly Finnish, aka completely incomprehensible, even after washing it with a translation program.

I've been reading through this and other forums for about a week and it looks like what I need is pretty simple - the names of companies in the US or English speaking ones in Europe that can provide me with an appropriate turbocharger, the right fueling stuff, and if possible names/sites of anyone that's done this stateside. I realize you guys see passing questions about this stuff on a relatively regular basis, and I have a pretty good idea what needs doing, but finding the parts to do it seems to be the trick. Any help is truly appreciated.

Also plan on replacing axles, transmissions, differentials... I doubt the stock stuff can withstand 500+ ft-lbs of torque you'd be pulling.

Wouldn't it be a lot easier to just find a 1990's 600SEL or 600SL? Those already have over 400hp

Though I must admit, it would be real fun to do a finnish style diesel project in the USA.

There are some people on this site that could help you, GSXR/Dave and Zeitgeist are who you want to talk to.

A good starting platform would be a 1986-87 300D. A 1995 E300D would require an engine swap to a tubo charged 606 right off the bat. This may not be a bad thing, the 606 flows better if you are going for high numbers it may be your best bet.

Correct and certainly able to put out 350hp. Remember both engines have about the same block, the difference is the head. The 606 has 4 valves per cylinder vs the 603's 2. So the 606 will flow better and if you are going for big numbers thats what you need.

but the 606 uses an electronic IP system last i checked.. the fins take a 603 IP and put it on the 606 and make it all mechanical.. and IIRC the 606 head will transfer onto a 603 block.i could be wrong

Right. And the 603 pump has tiny 5.5 mm elements that will not yield more than 200 crank hp at best. It needs the 7 mm elements and pump modifications done by Myna diesel.

The Fins have squeaked 482 hp out of that 12-valve head.

Thumbs up

Hell, I just cranked my full load on the SDL... once my fuel lines and gasket comes in, I'll report back with a road test.

and for good power to weight ratio: put in a 603 or 606 in a w201!

At the moment I am busy with that (om603/5 speed getrag in w201), and everything is going fine. Some custom work is required, nothing very hard.

And in the end a 200 kilos less to haul with you at the stoplight.

Go to www.mersuforum.net and find out more about 'superturbos' on the bottom of the forum, 'English section'
