Are the license plate lights connected to this indicator as well? And is this just for exterior lights? Or does it come on for interior lights as well?

On mine (1987 300D) it will go on for any exterior light, license plate included. Not interior. I would think they assume you will notice if your instrument cluster, dome or cc lights go out.
