De-Oiling Coolant??

Does anyone know how to de-oil the coolant? I seem to remember reading in Braingears something about using a baking soda solution and running it in the system and flushing it after. Thanks for your help.

De oiling

Here is my standard gravity method on my 1979 240D ( I would recommend one of those prestone kits where you can hook up garden hose as the inside of system gets real soapy) Some folks use a stronger mix, I used a 1 to 3 mix. You need to fill and flush until no bubbles may take a few more times. Just did this the other day. Wal Mart had shout for $3 for a 60 OZ jug. I just poured that right in. Car smelled great! Be very carefull not to over tighten your drain plug on radiator.

Capacity of system 21.1 pints or 10.55 quarts or 2.6375 gallons

o Drain system

o Completely fill with fresh water and run with heater on high with temp at 176 +/- for 10 minutes and or up to temperature.
o Stop engine let cooling system drop to 122 F.
o Drain system

o Mix a 1 part of liquid Shout to 3 parts of water (0.879 gallons of Shout and 1.75 gallons of water and fill system (based on 240D system capacity)

o Run idle Engine with heater on high for 20 minutes Temp to be 176 degrees F +/

o Stop engine let cooling system drop to 122 F

o Drain system

o Imediately after fill cooling system with freshwater run engine with heater on high for 5 minutes
o Drain system

o Imediately after fill cooling system with freshwater run engine with heater on high for 5 minutes

o Drain system (Approx 2-3 hours).

Repeat if soapy bulbles persist

Regards Tom

The coolant cannot be de-oiled, you can only drain the coolant and flush the engine/radiator/heater core to remove the contaminated fluid.

...and then find how the oil is getting in there.

I didnt mean with the anti freeze inplace. I guess I meant the cooling system when you flush it is there a chemical you can add to the water while flushing it to remove contaminants inside.... just like the suggestion above about using Shout.

I believe MB had a write in the FSM about using baking soda solution whenever you do your coolant maintenenace.

The FSM describes de-oiling and descaling. De-oiling solution is basically dishwashing soap or Shout. Heck, a Simple Green solution would probably work as well. Descaling is done with citric acid which you can get at a garden supply store or nursery. If the coolant passages don't have rust scale a citric acid flush might be more trouble than it's worth.
