Neutral Safety Switch
The neutral Safety Switch is not working on the 1987TD. I guess I need to replace. Is this straightforward, or is this a PIA.

That's not a common failure. Usually worn bushings on the ends of the rod that goes between the shift lever and the transmission means the transmission is not in sync with the shift lever to the degree needed for proper operation of the neutral start switch. If there is any fore-aft play whatsoever in the shift lever then try new bushings before adjusting or replacing the neutral start switch.

At the NSS connector there should be a violet wire from the key switch and a violet wire with white stripe to the starter. Understand the risk of this suggestion and absolve me from responsibility - jump the connector to bypass the NSS and see if the starter engages. Try this with a cold engine, glow plug relay disconnected and shut off lever wired in the down position to minimize the risk of the engine starting. There's still the risk of the transmission being in gear and the car moving.
