A/C Fan removal help
I'd like to check my a/c fan contacts because it comes on intermitently and someone said to check the brushes. etc for dirt and wear.
How do I access the fan? Is it on the passenger side behind the glove box? Thanks

If it's the W123's Remove the passenger knee panel. Right there you will find the fan. Remove the mounting bolts, The wire harness and it will come out. http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/W123Evaporator Picture 90 shows the Fan area under the panel I mentioned. Picture 119 shows the fan bottom, I'm removing the wire harness. The bolt heads at the outer diameter of the circle is how you remove the fan from the case. No you do not have to remove everything in the post shown to remove just the fan. It will drop out from the bottom of the evaporator case. Dave

Thanks, Dave. I proceeded to do it anyway and am all done. I took fan down (pretty easy to do). Held by 4 screws.
Motor and fan had mostly diesel soot dirt. Cleaned entire assembly using contact cleaner for motor side and degreaser for fan side. Replaced one brush. Couldn't unsolder the other off but wasnt too concerned as brushes weren't that worn. Sanded contact area of armature as best as possible and sprayed contact cleaner. Wiped off all visible dirt on fan using degreaser. Reassembled and reinstalled. Will try later if system works better. BTW, the motor brushes were stamped with K44. Must be the type of brush. I got oversized ones from NAPA and sanded to size.

Fan Operation
84 300D. Although I'm glad I got to clean the a/c fan motor and fan, it did not make the symptoms of a/c-heater fan not responding to fan switch nor a/c buttons go away...
It only responds to the defrost button. I can make it stay on auto mode by pushing the HIGH fan button while on Defrost, then the vent button, then the AUTO button. But fan, most of the time, will not come by using only fan switches. anyone ever figure this one out? Could it be the fan switch contacts? The temp control knob?

Probably the climate control assembly itself. Many threads here regarding resoldering it once out and the cover on it removed. defrost over rides all the automatic signals to the fan. In defrost you have max heat and max fan. All the other modes use signals from the fan delay switch, in car temp sensor and fan speed switch.

I kinda knew that defrost overrides everything else.... couldm you clarify what you were saying about "resoldering"? Is there a specific part of the CCU that should be resoldered? Is this what could be causing the fan not to come on? what comprises the "climate control assembly"? thanks....
