Today I went to the MB dealer to get a oil filter and an oil cap seal for my '82 300D Turbo. They said they didn't have the oil cap seal in stock, so gave me one off a new style plastic cap they had in stock. But the seal is the same diameter but not the same thickness. Well the lady said that the old style metal oil caps and the seals are no longer made. So I got the new style plastic oil cap. I know the old metal caps are out of production, but are the seals for them also no longer made? I'd like to have the old cap back on because the metal cap matches the engine better then the black plastic one.

Sad but true

My dealer told me the same thing. Like you said, they used to sell just the gasket, but now you have to replace the whole thing. The best thing to do would be to get some gasket material of the same thickness and cut your own gasket.

Ah Ha ,I see a business in the making "replacement gaskets for those nice metal MB oil caps" both my 240 and 300SD caps leak and I think I'd rather stuff a rag in them than to put on a plastic cap! guess that what you get when you merge with Plymouth!

Have you checked PartsShop for the oil cap gasket?

I found the oil cap gasket for the 4.5 there. Set me back a whopping .30, now not a dribble at all down the side of the valve cover.

Mike, PartsShop does have oil cap gaskets in 2 different sizes. I wish I could order from this site, but that's not possible since I live north of the border.

Bummer!

Know anyone that lives on the US side of your nearest Port of Entry? If so, have it shipped to them. I have read that sometime in the future the Shops hope to be able to ship international (at least to contiguous countries...eh).
