Advice on 98-99 diesels

Looking at 98-99 diesels, "upgrading" from a 98 Jetta TDI since we have a baby on the way I would think the MB would be a safer car being larger and more safety features.

Although I will miss 50+mpgs I figure the MB should be able to pull 30+mpg on the highway? I don't drive all that much anymore so it won't be too bad (commute less than 20 miles a day round trip).

What are some things I should look at when I go for a test drive?

One nearby is a 99 w/ 103k and they are asking $13.5

Opinions and advice appreciated!
