Oil & Filter
Getting confused:
-What's the best synthetic oil I can use for my 300D? -How long between oil changes? -Seems like there are good and bad filters as well: what's commonly recommended for 300Ds? Thx! F |

Your recent purchase is a 98 E300 and requires a diesel rated syn oil.
I previously used Mobil 1 European 0w40 in mine but Mobil changed all their labels a few months ago and everything got muddy as to what that was equilalent to so I went with the shell rotella 5w40 last time. The M1 Turbodiesel 0w40 is probably the new label for the old Euro product?? The filters you can get from Phil above and help support the forum.

Mobil 1 makes good synthetics for diesels. The highest rated one is the mobil 1 5W40, it was sold by 3 names delvac 1, truck and suv, and now turbo diesel truck.
Other two mobil 1 oils that are just as good are the 0w40 and 15w50. As far as oil filters the oem filters sold on the fastlane are junk. all have garbage inside the filter, refer to this link. http://24.14.137.240:8080//benz/oilfilter/oilfilter.htm Just use the fram filter CH2930, make sure its labeled "made in turkey" otherwise the others that are made in india or mexico have the same junk as all the other filters. Wix is another option as well, but youll need to find a wix dealer or a napa autoparts to get it.

You can't get the turkish fram filters anymore, at least not at any stores around here. Its a "no longer stocked" item as of 2 years ago. The only ones in stores are super-crappy "purolater" ones made in india, they're scary looking (horrid quality...) I use the Hengst filters or OEM dealer ones (but those are a bit on the expensive side at $17)
This is all irrelevant to the 1998 E300 Diesel though.

EGAD! Not another oil thread!
Do a search! There are more threads about "what-kind-of-oil-do-I-use" here than Carter has little liver pills.

Sorry, if it sounded blunt.............
If you would have mentioned spending hours reading searches and being still confused about the requirements for oil, I would have noted that and, hopefully, tempered my reply. A more direct question of "What do I look for on the side of the container?" might have alleviated all of the brand pitches.
As you can tell, if you do a search here, there is an endless array of opinions and speculations on brands, weights, how often to change, and maybe even color. Most, run into pages and pages of posts and lots of controversy. That is where the frustration mounts.

E300D's are simple any filter, Phil sells them or you can use dealer. 606's use a different filter so whatever anyone said about the early engines you can pretty much ignore.
You should be running Mobil 1 0w40, 15w50, or 5w40, or an Amsoil product of similer spec. You can change at FSS spec or sooner, if you run dino you cannot follow FSS.
