81 240D manual 0-60 in 17.5 seconds

Reciently I saw a thread on here that said the MB Specs say that a 240D maunal should do 0-60 in 22 second and the 240d auto in 24 seconds with a 3.92 axle gear ratio. I just timed my 81 manual 240D's 0-60 and it was 17.5 seconds. Many of my friends say that I have a higher gear ration in my differential which makes sence becuase I can beat any 240d off the line and haven't lost one yet. But on the top end I can only comfortably go 65 after 65 it is realy lowd. she cruises at 60 but 65 is what i normally go. it gets 31-33 miles to the gallon freeway. Were there different differentials put in the W123? Also how can i tell on the differential which one i have? thanks
-Stephen

Stock is 3.69 ratio, 3.92 is higher than normal, and would give you added acceleration but less top speed as you mentioned.

Differential

Is the 3.92 available or is this thing on my car an aftermarket thing? I dont see why anyone would want to put a lower gear ratio in it.

Tons of different axle ratios...

2.88:1
3.08:1
3.4x:! (300D N/A)
3.5x:1 (somewhere around there, 280Es)
3.69:1

I think the 3.4x:1 would be a bit better for a 240D on the freeway.

You will need the speedo from the donor vehicle to keep your speed readings correct.

I thought 220D's had 3.92's and all 240D's have 3.69's?

An 81 240D should have a 3.69 unless it's been changed by a past owner.

It is not unknown for a 240d to get a little buzzy at about 65. These cars really need that five speed overdrive transmission in my opinion. Your fuel milage indicates you probably have the stock rear end. On the rear of the differential you will find the ratio if really interested. I believe it is punched into the cast iron. I have heard of 240ds burning rubber but have yet to see a video. Most 240d owners only do timing runs on downhill slopes. For 0-100 try an egg timer. The vibration on 0-60 runs seems to shake watches up pretty badly as well. I agree that some 240ds are noticably faster than others. I would like to see the 1/4 mile 240d dragstrip results someday on one The above is all in fun as I own a couple of them as well.

It should cruise about 3300rpm @ 65mph on 205/70R14s with a manual trans (no slippage)

Hrm, maybe I did the math wrong?

Either way, it's not too bad at all at 65mph. That's why I think the 300D N/A diff would be ideal or the five speed manual.

240D speed

How do you tell the RPMs without a Tach? All I know is that it is unbearably lowd compared to my friends 77 240d manual and I can kick his but off the line any day of the week. @75MPH his sounds like mine @60MPH. I have the stock michellins with alloy rims on my 240 i think they are 185/75R14's they are nice looking tires.
