I need to hotwire my 240D

My most recent aquisition,1979 240D, the ignition switch was held up with wires. The PO couldn't find the key so I have no way to start it or open the trunk. I have tried a jump wire across in the female part of the plug. I got it to crank but no fire. I'm sure there is a combination of connections that have to be made to warm the GP's, turn on the electrics, and engage the starter. Problem is that I have no clue witch one does what. For now I just want to be able to start the car so I can move it around.

Any ideas? Hopefully the pics will help.

Vacuum is crucial to the starting/stopping of your engine. You cannot do it on electronics alone.

I know nothing of starting a MB diesel without a key (hot wiring), but imagine that it's not quite the easiest thing to do as there are many things you must account for (vacuum, electricity, steering wheel lock) all at the same time.

if your vacuum switch is still in the off position its never going to start. If its still got the correct ignition tumbler in it, why not just order a new key?

Jump starting 240d's

I've done this to a couple 240ds over the past few years. It is simple once you figure it out. Start by un plugging the vacuum line that goes into your injection pump. This is the vacuum line that cuts fuel to your engine and stops it. If you dont unplug it, it will fire and then immediatly die. get some wires with alagator clips attach one side to two or three glow plugs on the engine and the other side to the battery. how cold is it where you live? I live in san diego so in modert weather this has worked. after glowing for 25-30 secinds quickly take your wires and place one end of the wire on the big bolt on the starter and the other end on the small bolt on your silinoid. This should make the engine turn over. If it doesn't work right away, dont give up, for that starter it takes some caressing and the right spot to get it to turn. I hope this is usefull.

Should be easy to do. First un-plug the line that runs to the vacuum cutoff, then use some jumper cables to run power to the glow plugs (you may want to jump to the far side of the strip fuse so that it is in the circuit. Then use a screwdriver or something to jump between the large hot wire on the starter to the small wire that runs to the solenoid. Once it is running un hook the jumper to the GPs.

You do NOT need vacuum to start, only to shut off.

Only problem is the steering lock.

Edit: Argh, beat to the punch.

It's basically a parts car. I just need to move it once in a while to mow. What I have done now is take the back off of the tumbler assy. and plugged it into the rest of the wiring harness. I can then turn it with a screwdriver, but it still will not start. I'll check more into the vacuum issue.
It's the brown one on the right. Broken out windsheild, no driver window, roof smashed down.

Ha. Mines the same. This parts car 240D has a black dash with no cracks. I'm thinking about swapping. From what I've seen, only the light blue ones like ours have the blue dashes. All the rest are black.

I got some from paintscratch.com It is close, but a bit too grey. Looks better than the rusty chip it covered though!

Surf- is that blue one a driver?

It will be after Monday. I have put quite a bit into it and when I get my new Billsteins from Henry it will be my daily driver.
