HID Xenon Headlamp Conversion

Hello to all,

I've been thinking about converting the headlamps on my 1987 300D Turbo with one of the kits found on the web. The lights on this year of the 124 chassis are, in my opinion, less than adequate.

It looks as if one can buy the kit and the bulbs replace the exisiting bulbs with minor connections and mounting of the ignitor and ballast.

My main concern would be the heat from the bulbs melting the MB plastic housings. Does anyone have any experience with this set-up?

Thanks,
the tenor man

just to let you know..

its illegal to run aftermarket HID's because of the glare they have.. factory equipted HID's are designed to aim the glare towards the road bed... unlike aftermarket that does not

I think you'd want to do the euro conversion. You can't just throw some high watt bulbs in there and hook them up to a relay, you'll melt your housings.

Although the Bentley E-Class Bible is mostly useless, they do have a step-by-step section on converting to a euro setup.

The above point about the reflector not being designed for the HID I think is the limitation - you will be blinding oncoming drivers left and right. I had an Audi S4 with HIDs, the heat generated was much less than my 85w halogen Cibies - i had read before that it was the equivalent of a 35 watt bulb.

Plus--since there's no such thing as a dual-filament HID--you'll only have low beams.

People lose all sense of reason when it comes to HID lighting--it isn't that special.

ill let you know how the HID's work out. Im upgrading to the 95 look and bought DEPO euros, along with the headlamps i bought a HID 5000K kit. The stock setup on a 87 300D has a plastic reflector and will melt with HID's.

Youll need to upgrade to euro's, Euro's have a distinctive cut off and spread throught the road unlike US DOT's. DOT's just squirt light in the middle of the road.

The kit is due to arrive in a week, then ill install it and make a thread with a comparison of the amount of glare from halogen to HID.

I use 130W/100W bulbs on my vehicle which uses W123 style headlights made by Hella India, I have one relay per bulb and use high quality ceramic sockets, ordinary sockets will melt in days with this kind of wattage.

The problem with changing regular halogens to HID is that the light from a halogen bulb comes from the filament, a fairly small point of light. The reflector/mask/lense is designed to take the light from that small source.
An HID comes from the arc-tube, a much larger light source, which takes a completely different reflector/lense/mask design, they are not compatible.

People sell the kits to suckers, and they are installed, wish I had a rock for each one on the road.

Thumbs up

You have 20 year old reflectors in those housings, do you expect them to be like new at this point?

I have yet to see anyone install NEW DOT housings.

Anyone even considering a HID "conversion" MUST read this page.
