Thumbs up 603 fuel leaks...

I have what I believe to be a leaking delivery valve seal on my SDL. I have a fuel leak from the line at the IP, was not leaking before.

What does this typically look like?

What's the parts list needed to replace them? I think there are orings and crush washers as well as a specific tool...

Thanks

You talking about the metal lines that leave the IP and go to the injectors? You'll need the splined tool, it's expensive unless you can borrow or score one used.

New o-rings and crush washers should cure your problem. I need to do that too.

I didn't realize the SDL used the 603 too, interesting.

The tool is not all that expensive...I paid $36 for it from the MB dealer. Considering I have heard of dealers charging up to $3800 to repair these leaks $36 for the tool seems reasonable.

Last I saw a new one was about $55, could be far less wholesale at dealer.

SDL used it before the TD did...

Well wait a minute. When the DV seals leak, are they at the top of the line or the base of the IP?

I have a leak at the fitting on the fuel line. Fuel is coming out at the top of that fitting, not the bottom. Perhaps I only need a new line? It's the original from '87...

The delivery valves can leak internally and you won't see any fuel on the outside!
The injector lines are a different story, they leak visibly. If you overtorque them the ball ends can split then they leak, I tighten them just so, I can't recall what the torque spec is but its not a lot. A crowsfoot wrench on the end of a torque bar can give erroneous readings, its hard to get at the nuts you know so I just do it manually. I've seen them damaged by mechanics that over tightened them.

See, I don't think I'd just have DV problems all of a sudden. They were not leaking when I fired it up a few days ago...

I guess I'll just order a set of those lines. Can't be much from the dealer can they? I need those plastic klips too.

Rubber Fuel Lines

My 86 300SDL would not start this morning, after a night in the teens. I had just done the glow plugs a month or so ago so I suspected the fuel system. I had noticed that the hoses were tired and even though there was no fuel dripping that I could see, I figured there were some air leaks at least.

The first hose I pulled off just came apart and the rest were in terrible shape. None of the OEM clamps would go any tighter and none of the hoses were tight enough to prevent you from spinning them on the various hose barbs.

I got ten feet of 5/16 ID high pressure fuel hose, 12 new hose clamps and a new inline filter. I replaced all the rubber hoses, except the plastic ones from the banjo bolts on the fuel filter to the IP.

It started right up after I did a little cranking and bleeding. First at the fuel filter and then at the injectors.

I also blew into the tank return hose to see if it was blocked and after a bit of hard blowing I could feel it bubbling in the tank.

When mine leaked they leaked out of the the top of IP. Raw fuel smell, wet IP that leaked down onto the motor mount. Hard to see on the top of IP, a paper towel rolled up and placed there should confirm it.
