W126 Brake Disk

Changed out the rear brakes this weekend on the SDL. Was marveling at how good the disk looked on the driver side but when I took off the passenger side wheel the disk looked like a old 78 RPM record. WTF happened? It was just the outboard side of the disk, pads still had about 30% left. Is there something else I needed to investigated?

Did the wear appear to be fairly even, as far as thickness, on both the inside and outside pads? It may have been something kicked up from the road that adhered to the brake pad. I don't think this is uncommon on rear brakes.

Or if I had to guess, and there seems to be no other signs, that the PO may have let a pad go too long before replacement. And rather than replace the rotor, he just had someone slap new pads in there.

I did the rears about 3 years ago and everything was fine. The outboard pad had the same lines and groves as the disk. The weird part if it was a stone or such it would (should) have been limited to the area of the debris. This is the entire width of the brake pad.

if it looks like a record it is fine. as long as it is thick enough i wouldnt worry about a few grooves.

It's has pretty good groves in it. I got Phil sending me a set of discs for the rear. Something got up in there

Your outboard caliper piston is sticking.
Time for rebuilt calipers and new flex hoses on the rear.

Good point on the caliper and the hoses were looking sort of old. Like twenty years old

Thumbs up

If you do the lines, do the fronts too. Also, you'll want to replace the front plastic clips that hold the ABS cable and the brake line.

I can get ya the part number in about week. Every 126 I've seen has these broken.

Question Disc thickness, how thin can you go?

Anyone know the mm, or inch, on front and rear 126?
