More work still

Thought I'd post an update of our recent adventures in 300D land.

axle boot ripped, and led to a noisey CV. Bad news as kelly was on the way to meet a client. Limped home and decided it was time to replace them both, seeing as all the boots looked near failure. Found some A1 Cardone rebuilt axles with new CV's for 120 each. I know, they aren't the best but it was a good deal and the car is running great with them for now. I've noted the mileage and am curious to see how they hold up.

replaced rear diff. oil with synthetic.

I'm also happy that the loud "clunk" that used to happen when selecting reverse is gone. yay!

rear brake soft lines were discovered to be old and cracked. Bad.
so i picked up some new lines from my local shop, that continually has great parts, and found them to have a TUV rating on them. Nice! Also found that they have an excellent selection of Lubro-Moly diesel oil and additives. Going to try it on the next oil change.

New bosio nozzles have about 2500 miles on them now and she is running great. There is still a small amount of startup nailing still, very small, but i'm thinking of having them balanced soon as I didn't when they were installed.

Oil consumption is still not good, but its liveable. Maybe when school and work lets up i'll get around to that compression test I've been wanting to do. Then figure out where to fix that issue, if its fixable. Maybe a new set of guides in the head? I dont know.

Happy Motoring,
brer

Whose axles did you use? I used CVJ in Denver and have 20K on them now and they are working great. I also changed to synthetic when I did the axles. My rear end is quieter now than it was before.

Did you have to change any of the shims for the axle? I had to grind one down to get the axle in. I also replaced the seals while I was at it.

original axles has one shim each.
circlip would not install with shims in.

I removed the shim and the groove for the circlip just cleared enough for install. I read in the manual that shims are to keep play out of the diff. so i pulled back and forth on the inner CV and could detect no movement.

sound ok??

the axles were supplied by A1 Cardone, not sure if they did the rebuild.

I think now that i've put a few miles on the new axles i'll recheck the play at the diff. probably the smart thing to do, just pull the cover off and see if I can get a feeler guage in or not.

so I revisited the axles today. Only this time armed with diff. seals, new axle tension washers and a set of axle shims that I ordered from the dealer.

I had the old shims mic'd at my friends house, they were 3.1mm and 3.6mm.
Ordered those from the dealer and today after getting it apart again wrestled for a few minutes each side getting the cir clip back in. I found that once the clip started I could tap it lightly and carefully and it would find its seat. I tapped the tab of each one with a drift and double checked and rotated the axles to see that they were seated.... success.

New rubber brake lines and fresh fluid, new hand pump and fuel filters. Ran a can of Lubri Moly oil treatment for 15 minutes and changed that out.

Tomorrow I'll do the valves again and she'll be off and running.

Kelly remarked how much fun it looked like I was having.
I guess I was.

took to the valve train and replaced valve guide seals and springs with new MB parts. all filters and new oil. checked the chain stretch and came of with this. its a 617.912 engine with a 10 cam.

she smoked a tab when started, but after a run up the freeway and the release of a smoke cloud I think anyone here could be proud of she is much better. It feels like the new springs are giving her more valve control, as she isn't floundering in the higher revs like before. Power is up for sure. Fun.
