Smoking Problem Solved on 87 300TD
I think.
About 6 months ago my mechanic replaced the turbo on my wagon (168K miles) and that helped the blue smoking problem a little. Since then the blue smoking gradually got worse and it was burning a lot of oil (about 1 qt/500 miles). I was perplexed because the car has no blow-by, starts on the first crank, and runs strong, but it got to be too embarrasing to drive. So I took it to a different local mechanic that was also locally recommended. After a few days he called me and said that my motor needed a rebuild. I did not want to spend this on the car so I told him to just fix a few minor items and I would pick it up later. Yesterday he called me and said he noticed that the oil seemed really thin and it likely has SOLVENT in it! He said this was likely the cause of the smoke. He went ahead and changed the oil and he said it initially smoked like hell but now he says the smoking is completely gone!! If he is correct I have been running the car on thinned oil fo 6 months!!(although I was adding 15W-40 every month or so). I pick the car up tomorrow and I will wait and see.
