Smoking Problem Solved on 87 300TD

I think.
About 6 months ago my mechanic replaced the turbo on my wagon (168K miles) and that helped the blue smoking problem a little. Since then the blue smoking gradually got worse and it was burning a lot of oil (about 1 qt/500 miles). I was perplexed because the car has no blow-by, starts on the first crank, and runs strong, but it got to be too embarrasing to drive. So I took it to a different local mechanic that was also locally recommended. After a few days he called me and said that my motor needed a rebuild. I did not want to spend this on the car so I told him to just fix a few minor items and I would pick it up later.

Yesterday he called me and said he noticed that the oil seemed really thin and it likely has SOLVENT in it! He said this was likely the cause of the smoke. He went ahead and changed the oil and he said it initially smoked like hell but now he says the smoking is completely gone!!

If he is correct I have been running the car on thinned oil fo 6 months!!(although I was adding 15W-40 every month or so).

I pick the car up tomorrow and I will wait and see.

I would wanna know where the solvent came from... fuel dumping into the oil? previous mechanic add some solvent to eliminate some grime in the turbo bearings?

My prior mechanic is no longer around so I'm not sure if he was the source of the solvent.
How can fuel get into the oil?

Something seems odd about that explanation. How was the solvent getting in there?

over fueling from the injectors... a cylinder that is not firing... etc.

Assuming this is really a TD (wagon) it could be hydraulic fluid from the leveling system.

Bad seals in the leveling pump let the hydraulic fluid into the oil, which thins out the oil. What brought this to mind was the comment about the oil appearing to have solvent in it.

It is a wagon. I have never had an issue with the hydraulic leveling but I will mention it to the mechanic, thanks.

It's described as an '87 wagon. On the OM603, I don't think the pump is driven off of the cylinder head the way it is on a (wagon) OM617.

Come to think of it, I believe 603 has the combined PS/leveling pump. It's the 617 leveling pump that can leak into the oil.

I know nothing of the 617, but yes that's how the 603 operates.

My guess would be fuel mixed with the oil. I had that happen on a gasser once (914 with Webers) when the fuel pressure was too high, causing lots of extra unburned fuel. The result was very thin oil. Maybe a bad injector?

Fuel in oil will turn bearings black.

I've had fuel fill the crankcase enough to hit the rod ends, the engine went into runaway burning the fuel tossed around the crankcase (Caterpillar). Not good.
