State of the MB Diesel Art to Bluetec.

Seasons Greetings,

Whilst reading on another forum, I read this article. I thought it would be of interest to all of us.

Very informative article on the history of the diesel engine. Filled with awesome vintage MB adverts/photos. Don't missing this article.

Great quote:
Quote:
In addition to tar oil, the engine also could operate on “gas oil, kerosene, Texas oil as well as yellow or brown paraffin oil” – said a 1923 Benz & Cie. advertising blurb for the frugal power plant.
And now I know what the OM in OM603 stands for!!

I've not found the reveal for the OM yet, but I did find that on paper Rudolf's calculations called for 253BAR of compression!!!! that's over 3500PSI!!! and ours are likely under 300psi... wow. what was rudolf smoking?

OK I found the OM part, I also found a minor error, I think, it calls the first diesel car the W138 body style... Um I bet they meant the OM138 Motor, probably the w21or so body.
John
oh, and I would just about kill to get one of those ultra sleek supercars they built.

With a swept volume of 3,005 cubic centimeters, the OM 617, designed as an in-line five-cylinder, generated 59 kW (80 hp) at 2400 rpm and had a respectable top speed of 148 km/h (92 mph). With acceleration from standstill to 100 km/h in 19.9 seconds, the new top diesel model from Stuttgart was the liveliest and fastest diesel car in the world and featured impressive smoothness and economy. 53,690 units of the 240 D 3.0 were manufactured; in all Mercedes-Benz sold 945,206 W 115-series diesel cars.
the first 300D?
cool. a W115 240D with a 617, now I bet that is a car to have! almost 54thousand of them built shouldn't be too hard to find.

and this info...
he starting equipment of the five-cylinder diesel also was innovative: instead of the mechanical shutoff device of the 2.4-liter engine only a pneumatic device was used, so that the engine could be shut off with the ignition key. Starting was also by a turn of the key in the 240 D 3.0 and not, as previously was the case, by pulling a lever: when the driver turned the ignition key, preglowing was initiated and an indicator lamp lit up. When the light went out after a bit, the engine could be started in the normal way with a key. What now appears the most natural thing in the world was appreciated as a new comfort feature in 1974, which has since gradually found its way into all diesel cars of the brand and beyond.
WOW.

By far the most powerful diesel engine in a Mercedes-Benz car made its arrival in the S-Class in the year 2000. From a displacement of four liters, the light-alloy V8 OM 628 DE 40 LA developed 184 kW (250 hp) at 4000 rpm. It delivered torque of 560 Newton meters at 1800 to 2600 rpm. A top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) and 7.8 seconds for accelerating to 100 km/h illustrate the role of the S 400 CDI as first among the Mercedes-Benz diesel models.

Wow that's an amazing feat for a 4 cylinder. I wonder what the displacement is?

1923: The OB 2 diesel engine from Benz & Cie.

Cool, exposed push rods and rocker arms, wonder what it turned, reminds me of the old marine "Atlas" and "Washingtons" The "stamp mills"

Not a 4 cylinder, a 4.0 liter V8. Still, I wish I had that power!

Diesel is very popular in Europe and with 50% of all passenger cars diesel, I wonder what the price of diesel fuel is COMPARED to gasoline. Here in US diesel is roughly 15% more than the premium gas and that makes diesels a little less attractive compared to other countries.

Maybe in some places, but that's a pretty bold blanket statement to make for the whole country. I'm certainly not seeing anything even remotely close to that and I live in the US.

Here in Houston, Texas diesel fuel is somewhere between 10 to 15% more expensive than the premium grade gasoline. What I am wondering is the price ratio of diesel fuel to the premium gas in Europe, anyone know what that is?
