Momma says...
I'm hoping she was only making conversation or trying to desensitize me to the idea of shrinking the fleet.
She said it is time for me to part with my 1982 240D and 62 Olds..."donate, sell, just get rid of 'em". Should I call the doctor, the lawyer or what? Seriously, I'm considering whether or not to sell or to donate. Anyone have experience with the IRS rules for valuation of charitable donations? Motor On Lord, bless them Pigmies in New Guinnea but they don,t know nothing about diesels!

"Gertrude"
Can't you fight for the '62 Oldsmobile? Those Dynamic and Super 88s were really nice cars, a perfect example of American cars built well for their time.
The sedans and coupes looked very nice too, as did the 98s of that year. Johan offered a 1/24 scale model of the 1962 Super 88 4 door hardtop, it's a VERY accurate rendition, if you can find a kit. Years ago some fellow had a 1962 Olds Starfire, he was so commited to these cars he opened a shop up on Fillmore St. in San Francisco dedicsated to the repair of them. He couldn't keep going because they were not enough of them around to fix. Thy were very rugged cars, there was one '63 Starfire that someone drove through Afghanistan.

choices...
Jim is correct. Keep the 240 and the Olds. They are not making them anymore. Both are great cars.
You are are your own about the wife.

If you can keep one, keep the Oldsmobile. There are still tons and tons of 240Ds running around and they're dirt cheap. The Oldsmobile can only stay or go up in value.

My wife is always on me about the status of "the fleet". It didn't help that my oldest daughter, in from college, said the parking area looked like a junk yard. And said it in front of my wife's whole family as we were celebrating Christmas over there today.
And I've got the Camaro parked over in my sainted mother's garage....... I need to put Scar back towards the pasture area, and need to have the 300D hauled off. Then at least everything is drivable......

the olds had reverse low, down where most cars have low.PNDSLR.if it was a super 88 i'd take it off your hands, those rock.cool speedometers.i used to have a 64 starfire convertible.i wish i still had that car.it was built like a tank.had a foot actuator for the radio,so you didn't have to reach up to change the station just stomp down on the inner dimmer switch.

When donating, in Virginia at least, the auction house sells the car, and notifies you of the price that you deduct from your taxable income. My dad had a '61 Super 88, white with a black convertable top, blue interior, dual outside rear view mirrors, upside down tail fins, chrome skirts, curb feelers (however you feel about that) I loved the car, still do. I'm thinking a horizontal speedo that changed colors the faster you went, memory a bit hazy, he sold it when I was around 12, got a vista cruiser as the family was growing up. He tells me you needed a special spark plug wrench for the rear most plug on that Rocket V8. Just someone else ramblin' on 'bout the past... I'll stop now.

Donating is great if you don't want to bother selling something. You can usualy donate it real quick, and write it off.
Great way to get ride of old stuff. Can't you right off the value of what you donate against your income? I have seen people ditch some pretty valuable boats in this manner.
