Did this fancy MB antifreeze that everyone seems to push so hard even exist in 1985, the last year of the iron head 617? The Zerex G-05 might be a fine replacement for the Benz fluid, but both could be way overkill.

In the case of newer (synthetic) tranny fluids and engine oils, it is obvious that some folks in the much colder regions of the world can justify their use; but seems like the 'green stuff' worked fine for over 20yrs in the 220D and the 300D!!

Yup the fancy MB coolent did exist in 1985 but it has been updated/reformulated since then. Same with MB's ATF, back in 85 it was probably dino, now MB's ATF is synthetic.

As for the green stuff i cant say for sure if it was related but i did have some chalky white/greenish buildup on the water pump of my 300SD, which caused a leak. And i had the green coolent in the car at the time, now it has the MB stuff.

Then plastic radiator tops on these cars always have their necks break off, and this is atributed to using non MB anti-freeze which will corode the plastic. Alot of these engines die this way. It happened to one of mine.
Here's an article on it:

Luckily I wasn't driving at the time. I replaced it with an after market radiator with a life time warantee, so now I guess it's OK to put what ever kind of coolant in there, but I'd still like to know where I can buy MB coolant for my other benz.
