EGR Brain in passenger side firewall

So,

I was wondering if anyone here knows what this dial in this picture does, labeled 'EGR thing"? I removed mine not checking to see what position it was in (its labeled 1-9 I believe) when i took it out and then realized its part of the EGR brain.

This is for an 84 cali 300SD.

note: this picture was taken from this forum from a post that does not explain what the dial does.

comon don,

Its obviously something, the fsm does not mention it besides the egr computer in the passenger side foot well.

I am curious to its functionality so I asked.

Looks to me like an idle speed adjustment. I have a similar dial in my 87 SDL in the engine compartment, labeled ELR (Elektronische Laufzahl Regulierung). Maybe they put those into the california models earlier than into the federal models. Try if you notice a difference in idle speed between 1 and 7.

i really have no idea what it really does but it might tie in with the RPM computer above it.

I am interested in disabling/removing all my stuff as well but sort of reluctant to start as I'm not sure what to do with the connection points of the various vac lines! Can you help me with this TheDon?
