troubleshooting a noise from the rear..?

This question regards a '84 300TD.

I have noticed a slightly high pitched squeek/squeel comming from the rear half of the car.. usually when traveling on the interstate, at 58 or more miles per hour. also it seems to only be present when the drive system is under a load, even when holding a constant speed on flat, the noise will show up, but goes away when coasting.. also it is usually noticed after a few miles of interstate driving, but not as soon as I get up to speed comming on to the interstate.
where would I even begin to start looking? Rear end? transmission? center bearing (that would be nice!) or what else do I pay attention to, which will help to narrow down such a vage statement.

Rear Tires are the same, and at 35 psi.
differental is full of oil. (that was my first thought)

well, lets see here...

could be a pebble caught in the brakes somewhere..but it is most likely something along the driveline like a center bearing or a pinion bearing
your rear axle bearings could be dry or the CV joints in the rear might be dry as well.. I'm no mechanic but thats what I'd be looking at..

might be wind noise too..

a hum squeal or the like might be a wheel bearing especially at higher speeds A thump at lower speeds more likely a rear axle half shaft the boots crack and they lose thier grease

I'm sort of hunting a similar noise, a thump.

I know my axles havn't puked out their grease and my sway bar attatchment points are all intact as are the the subframe mounts, so I'm only left to suspect a broken shock mount.

I get a bump sound from the right rear corner at low speed when going over cracks in the road ir broken snow or anything where the tire has to drop to another surface by a half inch or more. it sounds like I have something big in my trunk and it's bouncing around. I have a friend that is a little on the big side and when he sits in the rear seat the noise doesn't change at all, but it gets worse and more frequent when I'm running on a quarter tank or less.

I guess I am gonna replace the center bearing, and rubber bushing..the rubber is shot, and the bearing is an easy replacement.. then move towards the rear differental... pinion bearings would not be fun.. and the 1/2 shafts are newly rebuilt... so I hope that is not it..
