Air Cleaner Rattling - already past the obvious...

merry christmas eve!

Air cleaner really rattles at idle, goes right away when engine RPM's go up.
The engine seems OK vibration-wise at idle, but i dont have an eye yet for these things in terms of what is acceptable.

I have already:
1.) Replaced air cleaner mounts
2.) Inspected the bracket - it is fine, everything is nice and tight.
3.) Replaced motor mounts, shocks, and shock mounts (had to be done anyway)

Today I am doing a diesel purge anyways, maybe itll smooth things out.

I am also missing the rubber part that connects the oil separator to the oil return tube securely, this could be it. Does anyone have a PN for this grommet?

What's next, any ideas?

Thanks,
DD

The rattle is usually from the side of the air cleaner housing hitting the bracket on the valve cover. Install a rubber cushion of some sort between the housing and the bracket. (I used a piece of split heater hose, secured by one of the bracket bolts.)

Adjusting the governor idle pin on the injection pump might also help reduce the virbation level.

I must be missing something, how is this different than the rubber isolation mounts that are already there? Or is this in addition to?

In addition to. Between the side of the cleaner housing and the bracket on the top of the valve cover. (The bracket that holds the 3/2 valves under the black cover and a few throttle linkages.)

Or it could be hitting the valve cover itself.
Mine does and I wedged a small rubber hose
in between and voila rattle gone.

Louis.

i think its my engine...

thanks guys, ill give that trick a try.

i defintely need to do an idle adjustment, the engine is rocking more than i previously thought it was.

you need the little grommet in the top of the air cleaner if your missing it. without it your pulling in unfiltered air

dieseldan44 12-24-2006 05:00 PM

on top of the air cleaner? is this the one that attaches to the breather?

Diesel engines have an inherent shake, some more than others, **************.com sells a kit to help. It consists of a piece of radiator hose and a bolt, and nut. You drill a hole in the side of your air cleaner housing, strategically placed, of course, bolt the hose to AC housing, making sure to air seal, thereby wedging and cushioning against cam cover......Grommet, you may be able to find a PN at ***************. Hope this helps. HAPPY, HAPPY...JOY, JOY

also, what shape air filter mounts did you use? the octoganal are for the non turbo air cleaners. make sure you got the tall round mounts.

I bought that kit from them and installed it, and am satisfied with the results. Now where is that pic?

You need these, along with the oil return tube - according to ***************

Also need (2) 0049975348 o-rings and (1) 6171870185 seal plug. 1 per car.

Glad you're happy, I have one myself somewhere, the car I bought it for is being sold. I can't figure out how to get a pic on here.

I hope that kit didn't cost more than $1.00  2" of rubber hose a 1/4" nut, 1" long 1/4" bolt, two washers, and a lock washer. It probably costs more to ship it than to drive an SUV to ace hardware and buy it directly. :D

It sounds like you folks a treating a symptom instead of fixing the actual issues that are causing the engine to run rough. If the engine is running correctly it will not shake noticeably.
