EGR removal, good or bad?

I have an 82 300D with a turbo and Im interested in removing the EGR. What are the positives and negatives in doing so. Overall, is it worth it?

Thanks everyone for helping me out--Merry Christmas

Matt

Negatives could be failure to pass inspection (unlikely) and also slightly increased emissions, but that one is up for debate on an engine with 20 years of soot buildup inside the intake due to the EGR.

Only NOx should slightly go up. Particulate (soot/smoke) and CO2 should go down.

Unless you are a MB purist (which you are not if you are asking this), a tree hugger, or absolutely must pass a visual inspection every year, the benefits of removing the EGR far outweigh the negatives.

Yea....im definately considering this....I come from New York, were we are lucky enough to get 'safety only' inspections...So i really wont have a problem here

also, Im no where near a tree hugger....as a matter of fact, I love the smell of diesel and also dump the oil into a hole in the yard...j/k

Depends on how it was brought into the USA. Some owners had to install one, some didn't.

oooh, messy, a hole in the yard... my dad does that and I cringe... I always take what I don't burn in my garage woodstove and give it to advance auto recycle tank. simple, and I am inthere most weeks anyway. I garden a lot, so I like to limit the chemicals in my land.

Take the EGR off and toss it out. The small increase in pollution is negligible in the grand scheme of things.

Pouring used motor oil into a hole in the ground however is inexcusable and incredibly stupid. Recycling centers are plentiful and the pollution is far greater than a non-functioning EGR.

I don't know anyone in there right mind who would actually leave their EGR on in the name of emissions, I was just simply trying to point out the negative, even though it's an incredibly trivial negative.

But i would think that the new ULSD we have it should keep the car within emission standards so i dont think any problems should come up if he indeed has to do a emission test.

amputation

So is blocking the vacuum line to the EGR with a BB just as good as totally removing the EGR?

Or are there more benefits for a total EGR amputation?

Most of the time, completely removing the EGR is just for cosmetics. However, they can have soot on the valve seat that keeps them slightly open all the time or a weak spring that can allow it to crack open under high boost.

Installing the blockoff plate under the EGR face will completely eliminate any chance of exhaust gasses getting into the intake but keep the engine looking "stock".
