Muffler fell off!

96 E300D, 171k mi. While I was driving yesterday, my muffler fell off! It seems to have rusted through where the pipe inlets to the muffler. The actual muffler looks fine, but when i called a shop (indy) to see how much it would be to weld it back on, he said $750.
I guess mercedes makes these as one long piece with 2 mufflers on it. One towards the middle of the car and one at the end. I was hoping that they could just replace some of the piping and weld the existing muffler back on.

Call a good muffler shop. The $750 seems pretty high to me.

Call another shop. They saw that star first......
Not a good sign that it already rusted through..... I'd have a good look under there at other items.....

I'm not surprised. I called Midas, Speedy, and the rest over the summer to get my muffler fixed (different car, but same experience). I needed a new center section- the rest was ok. They quoted me at $950 to $1250.
I replaced the whole thing myself with parts from Phil- total price (incl. shipping) : $205.

If you can't do it yourself, it will probably be cheaper to buy the muffler parts online and have someone put them in- a non-chain mechanic maybe. It took me an hour without a lift to do mine.

[edit: ah- the muffler braces fell off. $750 still sounds high.]

The muffler for that car is $529 on this site. A cheap gasser muffler probably wont flow enough exhaust for that engine with a turbo on it. You may have to pony up for this one.

when my exaust system went coput on the 240. i went to a couple shops and suprisingly meineke was the higest at a quote of 900 or somthing. i went to a certified walker dealier down the road and when i pulled up and told them what i wanted. they told me that they would not service my car maybe it was to old or somthing. Finally at a lil independent shop i got a good deal on a walker system. at a price of i think like 500-600 if i remeber right. and that was for the exaust systen up until the header pipe that goes down. Then on my way back from college, that pipe ended up breaking, doing about 70 it was funny because a CDI was just passing me and we both waved at eachother and then *GROWLL VROOM SCRAPPP* luckly the state police came and helped me rig the exaust up until i got home, which by the way was anbother 100 miles man did she growl. so in total with the exaust and the header pipe. i'd say a new exaust with instalation should run around 600-700 for a good one. but who knows. shop around

good god go down to merriam-graves and get a little 110V mig machine... about $400 should get you the welder and your very own gas bottle. Go to the local town dump and find some metal scraps, go home and spend about 2 hours teaching yourself how to weld. Then fix your exhaust. Congrats, for less money than it would have cost to pay someone else to fix your car you just got a very useful machine and the skills to keep your car alive indefinitely.

I'm going to go to another indy shop tomorrow and see if they will just weld it on. I do like the way Greasy Beast thinks though. I would take the time to just do a bolt-on system if I could find one. I'll have to call phil and see if this requires welding.

ya beat me to it GB, but I would recommend a 240V machine, and the tall bottle of co/ag and a spool of .023 wire. about 600.00 from miller or lincoln whichever you prefer. WAY better than a cheapo 110V system.

Mine also, has fallen off.

Rather, I cut it off. The PO had installed a gasser's muffler; it was choaking the turbo. A trip to murrays a sawz-all was all it took. Sure pipe-clamps arnt to professional looking; but it's better than the $90 that I was quoted at Tuffys. Cost me $30 and a couple of hours of time.

I must note that your exaust might not be round at that section. Mine wasnt - it requiered me to use a C-clamp to form the new tubing into an oval.

Michigan dosnt have smog tests or anything similar to that.

if smog tests are not a problem, why didn't you just put in a straight pipe? the turbo should quiet your motor fine... the NA motor NEEDS a muffler.

a glasspack's a muffeler... they're like $20... When they burn up (4 months tops), they're straight pipes...

for $750 you can buy a NICE 110 welder (hobart 140, with cart $500)...

Phil can hook u up with the exhaust...

It is a straight pipe.

With a "downtube." Murrays sell them with a swedged end so they fit togeather.

Just do what ConnClark did:

Cheaper and nicer looking too.
