Scuff marks on timing chain rollers

I was looking at my timing chain and notice there were scuff or wear marks on all of the little rollers on the chain. The metal was shinier in the middle of the rollers from wear marks. Is this normal? Is this an indication that the chain needs to be replaced? I also tried to see how high I could lift the chain off the cam sprocket as an indication of stretch and it would hardly budge.

Hummm.. I wouldn't say its normal, I've never noticed it on any that I've seen. Did you check the "chain stretch"?
Lifting the chain wont help on observing stretch. You have a oil pressure tensioner on the 240.

I just read up on how to check the chain stretch. I'll have to do it via the alignment marks method as I don't have the dial indicator. I'll be curious to see how it reads. I'll go do this right now.

It looks like I've got about 4 degrees of stretch. Is that too much?

Actually, I don't even know if those marks indicate your degrees of stretch. The mark on the harmonic balancer is at about 4, almost 5 past the TDC. Is that degrees of stretch or do I use that number to somehow calculate degrees of stretch?

4 degrees is not bad, they say you need to start thinking about changing it at 4 or 5.

Sounds like your doing it right. Go around several times and line up the cam mark carefully.

That's how chains work. Physical contact makes them shiny.
